How to Improve Composite Loops in Fly Tying - OPST
Jerry French explains the key components of a composite loop, some of his favorite materials, the difference between a shoulder and a hackle, and how to make your loops better. Using the newest synthetic materials as well as OPST dotted ostrich, and OPST's fantastic new dubbing spinner, Jerry ties two composite loops: a rear shoulder and a forward composite shoulder/hackle.

What's In The Vise??
When you sit down to a few of the same pattern do you prep things out a head of time or just tie one at a time without prepping hooks and materials?
When I sit down to tie stinger style flies like pictured above I will prep things a head of time to help me crank them out faster. Sometimes when I try to force myself to tie when I'm not on the mood or tired after being on the water I will prep some cut shank style flies instead of tying actual flies to have on hand for when I need them.

Wild Steelhead United - Myers
Wild Steelheaders United- Myers from Trout Unlimited on Vimeo.
Wild Steelheaders United was established to educate and mobilize the numerous wild steelhead advocates wanting to engage in the Initiative. It is a place where anglers can become more informed about wild steelhead biology and ecology, keep abreast policy issues, and learn about Trout Unlimited's conservation work. We may not always agree. We may not always have the answers. But we steelheaders share a common vision and for the future of wild steelhead. Together, we are a community with strength. With millions of dollars invested on the ground, Trout Unlimited supports this vision through the Wild Steelhead Initiative. Learn more at wildsteelheaders.org and tu.orgWednesday, October 1, 2014

Don't Wade Deep To Cast Farther
Don’t think that wading deep is the answer to getting a little extra distance on the cast. A deep wading position decreases the vertical distance from the rod tip (while in the firing position) to your anchor (the place where the line hits the water at the bottom of the D loop). The couple of feet you may gain by wading out further will often be lost in the cast, as wading reduces the height of the D loop and negatively impacts its shape and size. In most cases, wading to knee deep not beyond is the ideal. I see clients all the time slowly start creeping out deeper and deeper with each cast, Guides call them "Creepers" - don't be a creeper.

"Lady Gaga" works her magic on the swing.
In the past 2 days this Lady Gaga variation has gotten slammed by 7 steelhead in the lower Salmon River. Tied on a 45mm cut-shank the front & rear marabou stations are supported by spun deer and Artic Fox tail. They can't seem to resist it as it swings slowly past them.
